Evaluating students for Special Education

Informed written permission is obtained by parent prior to evaluation being initiated

The parent/guardian can decline to sign a consent for assessment.

Standardized assessments can be administered by anyone on the student's team who has access to the manual?

All broad developmental areas (cognitive, communication, adaptive, physical skills, social-emotional) should always should be evaluated

All areas of suspected disability indicated on the referral are addressed through the evaluation

Part B of IDEA deals with early intervention services (birth through 36 months of age), while Part C applies to services for school-aged children (3 through 21 years of age)

A screener is designed to help you identify WHO might need extra support. It is not designed to tell you WHAT that support should be

Developmental Delay (DD) is applicable for students three (3) through twenty-one (21) years old

Final eligibility determination is a whole team decision

Parents/guardians are not required team members for initial special education eligibility determination

Under federal law (IDEA), public schools must look for, find, and evaluate kids who need special education

Only test scores should be used to determine special education eligibility
