The Me Too movement was created in 2006 by Tarana Burke but sparked international coverage in 2017. This was due to Burke using the social media platform “Twitter” to state the following: “If you've been sexually harassed or assaulted write 'Me Too' as a reply to this tweet.” This led to thousands of people sharing their personal stories with “#MeToo ” at the end of their tweet.
The Me Too movement was created by Tarana Burke in order to help survivors of sexual violence share their experience with the world. Many people are unaware of the goals of the Me Too Movement, so they may make assumptions that the movement is a way of targeting men. In reality, the Me Too Movement was created to help survivors of sexual violence, with the main goal of spreading awareness. Tarana Burke hopes that through the movement, we could eventually reach a society free of sexual violence. As well as shifting the culture that transmits the idea that being vulnerable means permission over a person’s body, allowing those with more power to take away a person’s autonomy. The Me Too movement also helps restore the humanity of the survivors and motivates them to heal from the trauma that may not have been addressed before. Lastly, the movement is based on empathy; survivors feel comfortable enough to heal from their trauma, while also having a sense of community with people who have gone through similar experiences.
