Imagine you are planning a trip to Japan...

You find a community-run Airbnb in rural Japan. The house is built from local, sustainable materials by carpenters and craftsmen from the area. When you get there, you have your own private room upstairs for up to four people.

Downstairs is a communal space, where you can meet people, including travellers like yourself, learn about the local area, or enjoy local cuisine together using locally-sourced ingredients. You can also reserve a cooked breakfast, cooked by a member of the community who runs a nearby cafe.

Several hosts are able to speak English, recommending local activities, restaurants, shops, and helping you to chat with the locals in the community areas.
