Vote for your SJDG Board of Director Nominees!Below you can find the Bio for each nominee. Please make an effort to read each Bio before placing your vote.---Secretary---Brandon Beck:I started playing disc golf three years ago to rehab a badly herniated spinal problem. I knew I would like it because my dad taught me a similar game with Frisbees. We played it in the 'hood.’ "Must go to the right of the telephone pole and into the neighbor's trash can, stroke penalty if you hit a parked car." My passion for growing the sport is almost as inflated as my average scores. So I decided to get more involved with our club. I represent SJDG by selling merch which helps fund our many programs. I was born an engineer. I've been working in manufacturing for 22 years now. And a typical sci-fi movie geek. As such, I have a touch of OCD (have you seen my discs?) that makes me a good fit for being the secretary of SJDG.Areta Masters:
Hello, for those who don't know me, I am Areta Masters and I live in Evesham Township. I began disc golfing more than a decade ago but wasn't a regular player until a few years ago. When I discovered Stafford Woods back when it was a fairly new nine-hole course, I was excited by the prospect of being able to play on a regular basis and even more delighted by the wonderful group of people I encountered-not only welcoming and friendly, but also dedicated to growing the course and the sport. League play and work days quickly became a part of my routine and I have learned a lot about both disc golf and what it takes to develop and maintain a course-vision and hard work. I'm running for secretary of South Jersey Disc Golf because I want to do my part in supporting the efforts of our organization to promote both our sport and our region. As an engineering professional, I spend a lot of time documenting and organizing information and think the role of secretary is a good fit. I'd be honored to fill the role for a term.
----Treasurer----Dave Space:About 5 years ago I took my first trip out to California to visit a childhood friend. It was at this time I was introduced to the sport of disc golf. He took me to places like La Miranda and Huntington Beach but at the time I was still way too new to the sport to really understand how great the courses I was trying to play actually were. After that trip I would go back home to Long Island (where I was living at the time) with the desire to play more golf but with only one course on the island at the time (and it wasn't good..) that would prove to be difficult. Fast forward to 2013..
I move back to NJ in April and a couple months later in July a 9 hole course gets put into the ground at OCP. My lucky day! Since then the bug has not only bitten me but has infected my lifestyle. I've traveled up and down the east coast playing golf and I've since been back to California to play their courses as a somewhat experienced player and not the newbie that started there. Last year I played as many tournaments as I could and acquired as many points as possible to earn a spot in the 2016 PDGA Amateur World Championships.
If I'm elected to the SJDG Board of Directors as Treasurer, it will be my responsibility to keep the financial integrity of the club intact; and I plan to do just that. My goal is to maximize SJDG's funds by way of accurate book keeping and budget planing/maintenance. This will ultimately allow for more funds to come back to you, the player, whether it be in the form of tournament payout, trophies, course upgrades, or discs for sale at competitive price. As a player I often hear questions and conversations about "where the money goes"...Not just regarding SJDG but about any club. To combat this, not only will I have ledgers available at SDJG meetings that show our current financial standing but included will be a detailed purchase history since the previous meeting so that everyone can see just where the money goes. When it comes to this type of organization, I believe transparency is key! Currently I work for a surgical periodontics practice in which all incoming and outgoing finances are my responsibility. When it comes to the medical world there isn't much room for error and I plan on bringing this same work ethic with me. If I can handle a multi-million dollar surgical practice, SJDG should not be a problem.
Emily Apgar:Dear fellow disc golfers:I wanted to let everyone know a little more about me, my passion for disc golf, and why I am running for the position of Treasurer of the South Jersey Disc Golf Club. I was first introduced to Disc Golf by my husband while we were first dating. At that time, I lived in Ewing, NJ and we would frequently travel to Tyler State Park or Mercer County Park to play disc golf. Once I graduated college and moved to Ocean County, New Jersey, I realized that to play more than 9 holes of disc golf, we had to drive over an hour to play. While at Tyler State Park one day, we saw a sign asking for followers on Facebook for the “Bring Disc Golf to Ocean County Page”. By meeting Mike Keim through this Facebook page, my husband and I were some of people who performed the “Test Run” at Ocean County Park and helped to physically installed the first 9 holes, which I call my home course. This past year, I fully committed to attending and playing in each event in the South Jersey Series Events. Through the year, I have helped more at events, like organizing and handing out tags once the tournaments were completed. I also attended the open Board Meeting for the SJDG that was held in August so I could see more about the inner workings of the organization. At that time, I was excited to see how the organization has grown and I want to be a part of helping expand disc golf in New Jersey. I feel that I would be a good Treasurer to the SJDG because I am a very involved, active disc golfer. Having a background in education, I have experience working with budgets. I am also analytical, organized, and good at math. I am not afraid to jump in a volunteer when I see someone or something needing help. I am approachable and easy to communicate with. I hope you agree with me that I would make an excellent SJDG Treasurer. Thank you and throw well! Crash those chains! Emily Apgar #62719
