Type 1 diabetes occurs whenever the immune system mistakenly kills beta cells within the pancreas. This causes very little or no insulin to be released into the body. As a result, sugar quickly accumulates in the blood instead of being used as energy after eating energy rich foods. Type 1 diabetes is always treated with insulin e.g. Insulin injections in order to help regulate blood sugar levels. About 10% of people with diabetes have type 1 diabetes.

On the other hand, type 2 diabetes occurs when the body is not able to properly use the insulin released by the pancreas or does not make enough insulin. Due to this, sugar builds up in the blood instead of being used as energy for the body. About 90% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. Interestingly, type 2 diabetes is developed more often in adults as opposed to children.
