What is a protocol?

It’s a formalisation of the messages that two entities exchange, and the actions that they should take on sending or receiving those messages, in order to achieve some action or data exchange over the a network

Packet switching. Data is split into discrete chunks (packets) and moves through a mesh of links and routers. Each packet may travel a different path between source and destination host.

Circuit switching: Some dedicated path will exist between a host and a destination (effectively a circuit) all packets will travel on this ‘same’ route.

What is the difference between propagation delay and transmission delay? Which is the main cause of delay in a multi hop route? Why?

A. Transmission delay is the time it takes to write the bits of a packet onto a wire (or other physical media). Propagation delay is the time it takes a signal to propagate along a wire. Signals travel at in-the-order-of 108 m/s so often propagation delay is effectively 0. Transmission delay may be in the order of micro-seconds or milliseconds , I.e. Transmission time is longer than propagation time and therefore is the more important.

A. There’s no defined way. Usually, on the basis of location and an existing infrastructure, they’ll negotiate a connection to 2 (or more) ISPs independently and effectively become an IXP. Charging may be done at several levels e.g. Data throughput or just a fixed price service agreement!
