What is Your Homeschool Style?
How do you prefer to structure your child's learning?
Following a structured curriculum with a focus on grammar, logic, and rhetoric (writing & speaking)
Emphasizing living books, nature walks, and narration.
Utilizing textbooks and workbooks with a clear schedule and routine
Allowing your child to explore their interests freely without a set curriculum
Organizing studies around specific themes or topics of interest
What role does flexibility play in your homeschooling approach?
I'd like to use a predetermined curriculum and flexibility isn't super important to me
I'd like to have a framework but with room for spontaneity
I prefer to adhere to a rigorous schedule that allows for little flexibility
Adapting to my child's interests and ability to change course is important
I'd like some wiggle room to explore within unit studies or themes
How do you want to incorporate hands-on learning experiences?
Through lessons and memorization of learned pieces of information
Nature studies, art and handicrafts like crocheting, drawing etc
Through practical experiments and activities suggested by our chosen curriculum
I'd like my child to participate in real world experiences and projects that have practical usage
Through themed projects based on whatever unit study we are doing at the time
What do you think about standardized testing?
It should be used to measure progress
I'm not totally opposed but would rather use tools like presentations to make sure my child understands what they have been learning
It's an essential part of academic success
It isn't needed; simply observing my child and having a conversation about what they've learned should be enough
Our unit studies of specific interests naturally include some form of assessing where my child is at
How do you feel about the use of technology in homeschooling?
I don't see us using it much, aside from necessary research or educational videos
I'd rather not use it because we would rather be outside experiencing things hands-on
It's OK if it is integrated into lessons to supplement other ways of learning
I think using tech will be really helpful in our homeschool
We may or may not use it, depending on what we are studying
How involved as a parent do you want to be in your homeschooling?
I would like to act as teacher, providing structured lessons and assignments
I would like to facilitate learning by helping guide my child and fostering a love of learning
I would like to be very involved in overseeing and directing, by not necessarily in a traditional "teacher" role
I would love to support my child's self-directed learning
I would like my child and I to learn side by side
How important is it that your child can learn at their own pace?
Learning at a structured pace is necessary for academic success
Flexibility in pacing is OK within a framework of learning objectives
Maintaining a consistent pace ensures covering all necessary material
Learning at their own pace is essential for fostering a love for learning
Pacing varies depending on what we're studying and how long we want to spend in that area
What role will a community play in your homeschooling approach
Our primary focus is on individualized instruction at home
Community involvement is encouraged through nature walks and group activities
Academic instruction primarily occurs within the family unit
Community engagement is valued for providing diverse learning opportunities
Community involvement may enhance unit study experiences through field trips or guest speakers
How will you handle extracurricular activities and socialization
Extracurricular activities are secondary to academics but are useful
Emphasizing nature-based and artistic extracurricular activities
Extracurriculars aren't necessary, as academics should be prioritized
Encouraging participation in various activities to explore interests and socialize
I can see us incorporating various activities if it applies to what we're studying
