After the last regular elections in July 2021 the ECC still had 4 open positions. Sina unfortunately missed the application deadline, but was very motivated to join the team. Considering the open positions the ECC decided together with the Board to let her join the ECC informally until the next elections. So Sina was already an active part of the ECC for half a year now. This vote is an agreement that the membership wants her to join officially and continue her work.

Briefly describe your UAEM background, and any relevant leadership experience.

My name is Mariam Mubarak-Gabrian and I am a medical doctor with a big interest in Global Health. I have recently graduated from the Medical School of the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, and I am currently working as an academic teacher at the Vrije Universiteit Faculty of Medicine in Amsterdam.

Even though I have not been a part of UAEM before, I do have extensive experience in leadership and teamwork from my work in the International Federation of Medical Students Association and the Student Council of my university. During the bachelor I represented my fellow students for three consecutive years on matters such as exam fairness and relevance of the medical curriculum. Therefore, I am aware of the commitment that such a position requires and I am prepared to make it.

Moreover, in my current job at the VU medical faculty, in addition to my academic tasks, I also coordinate the production of test questions for the national medical exam (Progress test). For this task I lead a team of 5 people and work closely with medical specialists to gather relevant feedback. Here I have been able to develop my time management and leadership skills, so that I can maintain a “helicopter view” over the entire process.

What is your motivation to be on the ECC?

Because I am very interested in Global and Public Health, I have been looking for ways to get involved. This is how I discovered UAEM, and I was immediately impressed with the campaigns that the chapters organize. This inspired me to join the fight for availability of essential medicines and get more informed on the matter. I believe I would be able to learn a lot from the other members, and I would like to join a group of motivating young people who want to make an impact in the world.

Briefly outline the specific skills you bring, and/or contribution you hope to make, to this leadership body.

Through my experience in the IFMSA and Student Council, I have learned how to work efficiently in a team and respect the wishes of other people. I believe that a good leader can set aside their own point of view when necessary and represent the interests of their team. Even in difficult situations, I am able to remain objective and diplomatic.

Moreover, I enjoy mentoring students and helping people find solutions to their problems. I am a fast learner and can be very flexible when necessary.

Are you currently serving as National or Local Coordinator within UAEM Europe? If so, which one and how will you divide your time between the two different roles?

I am not currently serving as a National or Local Coordinator.

Briefly describe your UAEM background, and any relevant leadership experience.

I have been involved with UAEM since more than two years now and I have been really enjoying it so far. I was very interested in Global Health and the goals and values of UAEM really spoke to me. With my chapter in Berlin we have already achieved more than I could imagine before starting with UAEM, e.g. Small demonstration but also seminars that were held by just us, where I have been really active both in the organization process and the execution. I have gained a lot of knowledge and great relationships engaging in this organization and learned to take over responsibilities and improved my organizational skills. Throughout the two years I understood what UAEM stands for and made some valuable connections. Especially because I started getting involved in the middle of the pandemic, I really value UAEM not only for the values and goals, but also for the many possibilities it provides to get connect with like-minded people.

Though I do not have a lot of experience in leadership positions, I would really like to take on the challenge. I think I am ready and I would love to get more involved and get more insight into UAEM.

What is your motivation to be on the ECC?

Within the two years of my involvement, unfortunately, not all the campaigns of UAEM Europe got all the way through to my chapter. I am seeking to change that. Since I am very active in my chapter, I hope I can draw more attention to the campaigns and get more involved with my chapter also on a more international level. Also, we are planning on implementing ETAF next year at our university and I am hoping to form connection with chapters that have already achieved that or are in the same process to get tips and maybe find solutions together.

I am very organized person and do not fear taking on responsibilities. I also really enjoy working together as a team and connect with other people. Because I am very active in my chapter and I know the current National Coordinator of UAEM Europe very well, I think I can achieve a better connection between those two.

Are you currently serving as National or Local Coordinator within UAEM Europe? If so, which one and how will you divide your time between the two different roles?

I am neither a Local nor a National Coordinator of UAEM right now, so I think I have the capacities to still be active in my chapter and also get involved on the higher level that is the ECC. Still, I am well connected with the National Coordinator of UAEM Germany, so I have a pretty good overview of what is happening in the chapters in Germany and where are possibilities for connections.
