How does integrating AI and automation into the construction industry contribute towards the optimisation of the UK’s 2050 net-zero target of improving building performance of homes?

1)What qualifications do you have relating to construction and the built environment
2)How many years experience do you have in your profession
Under 5
5-10
11-20
21-30
31+
3)There are four main points I have extracted from governments net-zero plan for greener home; these are as follows:
  • Updating building regulations to reduce the lifecycle carbon rate of homes by implemeting low-carbon building and energy alternatives and better insulation standards.
  • introduce green energy homes grant to lower annual GHG rates.
  • improve the current EPC (energy efficiency) bands of all homes to B.
  • proposals to install heat pumps and hydrogen boilers to homes.
Do you believe each of these new policies and initiatives will help towards the UK having greener homes and reducing greenhouse gas emissions? Would you add anymore points to the strategy to improve building performance of homes
4)From the literature I have found these certain elements which affect a buildings performance. These are the building envelope, building services, building comfort, and construction techniques.

a)How can the building envelope of a home be improved upon to increase its building performance?
B)How can the building services of a home be improved upon to increase its building performance?
C)How can the human comfort of a home be improved upon to increase its building performance?
d)What different construction techniques can be used when building homes to increase its building performance?

5)By improving these elements (building envelope, building services, human comfort, construction techniques) would this improve a buildings energy efficiency and lifecycle carbon rate. And out of all these building performance elements which do you believe is most important to reducing a homes lifecycle carbon and why?

6)Some AI and automation I found in different literature used for improving building performance of homes were: building energy management systems, LiDAR lasers, Machine learning algorithms, Drones, Internet of Things, and SLAM robots. Answer either A or B.

a)Have you ever used AI and automation in any of your projects, and if so what sort of AI have you used?

b)If not, were there any barriers or reasons for not using these in previous projects and would you use AI and automation in future projects. If so, what type(s) would it be?
7)Answer either A or B.

a)How has the AI and automation you used assisted in improving building performance, for instance in any of the previously mentioned elements which were the building envelope, building services, human comfort, and construction techniques to reduce a home’s carbon emission?

b)If you havent used AI and automation before then how do you believe AI could assist in improving building performance, for instance in any of the previously mentioned elements which were the building envelope, building services, human comfort, construction techniques to reduce a home’s carbon emission?
8)Most common AI and automation barriers found within different literature were cultural issues, high capital costs, lack of training and development, unskilled workforce, maintenance, and security.

a)Do you believe these barriers to be true in your experience for the reason why AI technology is not used regularly in projects. For example, cost to buy and maintain the equipment or lack of understanding from professionals on how to use it.

b)Do you know of any other barriers yourself?
9)Which of the barriers (cultural issues, high capital costs, training and development, unskilled workforce, maintenance, and security) do you believe are affecting AI and automation being integrated into the industry the most and why?
