SANDRA REGENSBURGER (ECC)

Briefly describe your UAEM background, and any relevant leadership experience.

I joined the chapter in Vienna in October 2019 after hearing about UAEM
for the יִrst time at an Q&A with MSF. At the time I just started my
second year of medical school. Before I got to university I went to
Cameroon, Africa for 6 months as a volunteer where I worked at a
hospital. Seeing people suffer and die from diseases that could easily be
treated in the western world really triggered me. That was the time I
decided that I want to use my voice for equal medical healthcare.
Ever since I joined UAEM I could learn so much from great people. I
planned my own little events (such as a יִlm screening) and was involved
in everything going on at UAEM in Austria, as we are the only chapter
here. Also I was part of any decisions made for our chapter.

What is your motivation to be on the ECC/EmCom?

My motivation on one hand is to educate myself about how the
chapters in Europe work together and how we could bring this
teamwork further. Also for myself to learn how to make the most out
of this leadership position.
On the other hand, I would like to use all the knowledge and
information I would gain and try to pass it on to as many people as
possible. With the experience from other chapters and brainstorming
sessions on how campaigns etc. Need to be planned, I could be part
of bringing UAEM further, in Austria as well as in Europe.

Briefly outline the specific skills you bring, and/or contribution you hope to make, to this leadership body.

I think about myself as a reliable and well coordinated person, which
are skills/characteristics I יִnd to be really important in leadership
positions. As I enjoy planning things, I think I would be a great יִt for
the European Coordinating Committee. One could say I feel
passionate about this topic, which is why I would look forward to
participate in such an important part of UAEM as an organisation and
push our campaigns further.
Although being in a leadership position would be a new experience
for myself, I am convinced that I would be suited for this task. From
former employments and from the work I was able to do at UAEM so
far, I always received positiv feedback for my coordinating skills.

Are you currently serving as National or Local Coordinator within UAEM Europe? If so, which one and how will you divide your time between the two different roles?

No, I am not currently serving in any position. Therefore time
management is not a problem.

LARA POHL (ECC)

Briefly describe your UAEM background, and any relevant leadership experience.

I joined my chapter just over two years ago in the spring of 2018. I then
officially registered as a member of UAEM at the European Conference
in 2019.
I was really lucky, as I was also part of hosting that European Conference
here in Hamburg. My work with UAEM has otherwise consisted of
organising the social media accounts of my chapter and creating
Instagram stories and posts.
Last year I organised an event to inform students from my university
about Zolgensma and the history of its development and pricing.
More recently, I have taken part in the COVID-19 Campaign Calls with
other members of UAEM Europe and became a part of the social media
group. Together, we created the #OneForEveryone Challenge and raised
awareness, concerning the development and access of COVID treatments
and vaccines.

What is your motivation to be on the ECC/EmCom?

During the European Conference, I first experienced how much fun
working and exchanging ideas with UAEM members from all over
Europe actually is. This has become even more evident to me during my
work on the COVID Campaign and so I would like to continue doing so in
becoming part of the ECC.
I am excited to take on more responsibilities and play an active role in the
further development of UAEM Europe in the coming years.
I would love to get involved in the process of creating new campaigns and
the supporting strategies.
So far, I have really enjoyed working with my chapter on projects and
gaining experience, but I now feel confident enough to become part of one
of the comittees. I would feel lucky to be able to learn from and with a
diverse, motivated group of other activists.

Briefly outline the specific skills you bring, and/or contribution you hope to make, to this leadership body.

My time with UAEM has taught me a lot about the organisation and how to
coordinate activism effectively. I hope that I will be able to use my skills to
communicate with UAEMs chapters, listen to their problems and support
them in any way necessary. I want to use my creativity to come up with
solutions to their problems and start conversations about the obstacles they
are facing. As a medical student I have learned to deal with a high workload
and I am excited to learn more about the inner workings of UAEM.
I hope that I will be able to further develop the strategies, which are already
in place, but also challenge the ways things have always been done.
Considering the attention that the COVID vaccine has gained, I hope there
will be lasting conversations about the way medicines can be made more
accessible to everyone and I want to ensure that UAEM is part of those
conversations.

JOHANNA ELBEL (ECC)

Briefly describe your UAEM background, and any relevant leadership experience.

When I started my bachelor in European Public Health in Maastricht in
September 2018, I directly joined UAEM. After high school I volunteered
in Indonesia and India, where I organised awareness workshops regarding
recycling and climate change and led a youth club surrounding climate
change and cultural awareness. When I returned back home I dove into the
subject of racism in medicine for the first time. UAEM therefore perfectly
fit to my passion, to my career and activism plans. As a member of UAEM,
I contributed to the idea, the organisation and the performance of the
workshop ‘the journey of a drug’ in November 2018. In my second year of
Uni I was elected to the position of the policy coordinator of UAEM
Maastricht. My task was to further work on the implementation of ETAF at
Maastricht University. I enjoyed this position very much (until I went to
London for my semester abroad in Jan 2020), especially because we are
advocating together, as a great team, for our common goals and values. I
am now involved in the COVID-19 tracking and in the implementation
process of ETAF at Maastricht University.

What is your motivation to be on the ECC/EmCom?

The COVID-19 tracking workforce impressed me. I am not only proud to
see the progress we made during that time, I am also noticing how satisfying
it is to work for this important purpose with such an amazing team, with so
many passionate people. I am hereby applying for a position in the ECC
because I want to keep that level of engagement. The contribution to the
Maastricht chapter fit my interests as a newbie. I will continue engaging in
UAEM Maastricht, however I want to challenge myself and work with
students from other chapters as well. During the COVID-19 tracking I
noticed how stimulating the work with other chapters is, one really feels and
sees how many students are collaborating. I would describe myself as a
creative person and am therefore looking forward to being involved in the
ECC, also to contribute to the yearly campaign.

Briefly outline the specific skills you bring, and/or contribution you hope to make, to this leadership body.

Creativity, original ideas and commitment are some strengths of mine,
which will stimulate the ECC team positively. I have strong networking
skills and hope to use these in the position as well. My contribution to this
leadership body will include commitment, passion and reliability and also
fun and joy around activism. As I learned in Indonesia and in my time with
UAEM so far, this joy shouldnt be forgotten so that we can reach our goals.
As a Public Health student I have insight in various aspects of it and
understand complex interactions in society and issues like externalisation
and neocolonialism. For me it is important to shed light on these underlying
structures. Another strong interest of mine is the underrepresentation of
women in context and content of research all around the world and I look
forward to discussing this with fellow team members.

Are you currently serving as National or Local Coordinator within UAEM Europe? If so, which one and how will you divide your time between the two different roles?

I am not going to continue the board position of UAEM Maastricht but
will definitely continue engaging as an active member in the chapter. I will
support future board members with any questions they might have and am
sure we will collaborate perfectly, exchanging ideas and updates,
stimulating each other.

LYDIA HOLTGREWE (ECC)

My name is Lydia and I am a 2 nd year medical student enrolled in a German-English study programme at the University of Southampton. I have an interest in the epidemiology and immunology of infectious diseases. After my 3 rd year of medical school I want to take a year out to do a Master’s degree in Global Health Epidemiology, enabling me to pursue my passion for the prevention, spread and treatment of disease even further.
Since starting my studies in 2018, I have been an active committee member of foMSF (Médecins Sans Frontières) Southampton, where I helped organise local fundraising and speaker events to spread MSF‘s message about deficiencies in universal healthcare access. When given the opportunity to organise a Global Health conference on infectious diseases in Southampton in April 2020, I gladly seized the
opportunity. Although a huge time commitment, organising this conference was undoubtedly an incredibly enriching experience, which brought me into contact with many brilliant and passionate minds from various disciplines. During this time, it became increasingly clear to me that health inequalities and missing access to indispensable drugs are problems that do not solely affect low- and middle-income
countries, but also developed countries with working healthcare systems.

Now that I am about to return to Germany for my 3 rd year of medical school, I want to keep working against global health inequalities on a larger scale. UAEM with its strong global network and its aspiration to tackle medical injustice on various levels offers this opportunity. I am impressed by the unified approach UAEM is taking against pharmaceutical companies‘ drug monopolies, which would not be
possible without the European Coordinating Committee (ECC). By providing roadmaps for the implementation of its policies, such as the TBOM campaign guideline, UAEM can ensure that chapters have sufficient support and a point of contact if difficulties arise.
In light of the current Covid-19 crisis, the ECC has reacted swiftly and educated the public about the need for universal access to a potentially life-saving vaccine which might become available soon. This work requires commitment and reliability, qualities I am confident I can provide. With my experience drawn from organising conferences, events and work with MSF I am convinced that I could be a valuable asset for the ECC.

The flexibility, swiftness and enthusiasm UAEM works with is worth being supported and I would love to be part of this team which does not hesitate to face public authorities with bold proposals in order to facilitate a necessary shift in modern medicine.

DAPHNE LENZ (EmCom)

Briefly describe your UAEM background, and any relevant leadership experience.

I am at UAEM since January when the German Conference took place in Leipzig. Since then I was involved in the UAEM UK transparency Group for Validation of the Tracker. I also helped with the data collection for Covid19 repurposed drugs. I am helping further with writing the methods. In the local Heidelberg chapter I was organizing 2 online lectures acquiring one of the speakers (Pro. Bärnighausen). My responsibilities were further to organize the facilities. Another worthwhile experience was to lead and organize with the Jusos Heidelberg a discussion round, where I presented together with Aurelio (UAEM member) the current Campaign and the German Petition. I am further responsible for the Twitter and therefore responsible for Event promoting and also for posting current UAEM related topics. I was member of a small organization team for a 3-day symposium in Heidelberg with 1.000 participants and more than 30 speakers. Co-leading the helpers of the Festival, concepting and organizing the talks.

What is your motivation to be on the ECC/EmCom?

It is highly relevant to communicate Information in an accessible and inclusive way to support motivated UAEM members and motivate new ones. I wish to contribute to this role of EmCom, to collect and present the knowledge and experience of UAEM advocacy. What I experience till now is that EmCom is doing an amazing work. They immediately answered us when we asked for support with our lecture series. Also the new European Handbook is helping to strengthen and grow the UAEM Network. I would like to help to find ways how to connect the members, to give a perspective without dictating Actions. Mainly I am interested in making collected Information to sustainable knowledge, which is easily accessible and effective.

Briefly outline the specific skills you bring, and/or contribution you hope to make, to this leadership body.

I am a good team player, since I organized events in different student groups, and learned to work constructively together. I further hold a workshop, also in an internship, where I had to teach the employees about ontologies. Due to different experiences such as this I am skilled to explain complex correlations. My experience in acquiring speakers and conceiving talks could also help to organize further UAEM webinars, which help to educate and further motivate members. Moreover, I learned how to present topics in social media through my responsibilities in Heidelberg and also through work in other student organizations as for example the queer-feministique collective. Beside UAEM I am familiar with Health Inequality and Access related questions due to a seminar work on access to orphan drugs. Further, I will continue my Studies with a master in sociology, science and Technology, which involves global health. I am skilled in data science (databases, data handling + visualization in python), because of my Bachelor and my internship, helping me in collecting, processing and visualization of data.

Briefly describe your UAEM background, and any relevant leadership experience.

I have only recently become involved with UAEM through joining the COVID-19 access to medicines campaign in the UK, but I hope that I will be able to learn quickly and transfer skills I have in other areas to make me a suitable candidate for this position. I have been really enjoying this campaign and feel that I have learnt so much from the teaching they have provided and through listening to the experiences of others. I have always had an interest in global health during my time at university and have tried to pursue my interest in this area. I have helped lead a research group over the last 3 years on integrating physical activity teaching into the medical curriculum to help enhance students’ knowledge of lifestyle management options in aim of reducing polypharmacy. This project has been building up over many years now and I was meant to be giving a presentation at the Scottish National Medical Education Conference to discuss all the work we achieved, but unfortunately due to coronavirus this was cancelled. I was a collaborator on the Global Health Education in Medical School study carried out by Incision UK in 2018. I have been the medical school representative for the last two years for the University One Health society here in Edinburgh. I have a lot of leadership experience in slightly less relevant areas that I really hope to be able to transfer my skills from and apply to this position. I have sat as the secretary of the University of Edinburgh Sports Union this year and have helped manage this large governing body. I have also sat as a key member on the finance committee for the sports union and on the awards committees. Although these positions are less relevant to this position, I learnt an enormous amount about working in teams, time management, conflict resolution and dealing with stressful situations.

What is your motivation to be on the ECC/EmCom?

I have always felt extremely strongly about inequalities in our society and I have always wanted to find a way to try and make some sort of difference. I have spent so long scrolling through all the pages on the UAEM website and everything I read made me feel like this was a group of people who share the same values and beliefs as me. Everything I was reading, and having listened to all the people who have been helping guiding us on the COVID-19 campaign, highlighted to me how much this is something I want to be more involved in. I really enjoy working in teams with people and using our skills together to create new opportunities and resources and Ð really feel that this position will enable me to harness all the skills I have gained elsewhere to help produce some amazing work. I am currently a medical student at the University of Edinburgh but I also have an intercalated degree in Epidemiology. It was during this degree that I learnt so much from my peers and Professors about the inequalities in health and I was inspired by listening to the research and work others had carried out. I learnt a great deal in this time and fostered relationships with a lot people who helped inspire me to do more. This all helped motivate me to want to get more involved with groups of students who are already doing such amazing work.

Briefly outline the specific skills you bring, and/or contribution you hope to make, to this leadership body.

I am an extremely hard worker and have a lot of determination. I am always very passionate about everything I do and love to take on new opportunities wherever I can. I am very sociable and love to meet new people. I am a good listener and enjoy learning from others on my team. I have experience leading large meetings, making educational resources, speaking to senior management teams and contributing to international research projects. I hope to be able to contribute to the team using the skills I already have, to learn from the others in the group and to also have some fun!

LOTTE LEHMAN DE LEHNSFELD (EmCom)

Briefly describe your UAEM background, and any relevant leadership experience.

My journey with UAEM started in September 2019 as a General Member within UAEM NL, Chapter Maastricht. I soon realized that the goals and strategies of UAEM agreed to what I wished for in the global health field. Doing the Masters in Global Health at Maastricht University taught me that global health is a political question. Therefore, global health should be addressed in such a way that health(care) becomes a human right, and thus, is available, affordable and accessible for ALL. Going to UAEM’s information evening showed me the dedication of young scientists, all with a shared interest: realizing access to medicines worldwide for everyone. Joining UAEM was a logical choice for me since I was able to put the knowledge I gained during the master’s in Global Health, into practice by getting actively involved in projects and campaigns to raise awareness on the global access to medicines problem. Only after 4 months of joining UAEM, I was encouraged to apply for a board membership within UAEM Maastricht and I was lucky to start 2020 as the new Policy Coordinator. In this role I had to take the lead in communicating with our Advisory Board, plan and chair a policy-implementation meeting, be the first-contact regarding the policy implementation progress but also lead general meetings. Besides UAEM, during both my bachelor and master’s, I have engaged in a lot of group work where I routinely had to be the chair. This was during virtually group work with students in India and Canada, working in a lab, debating and working on countless of projects with (sometimes over 10) people from different backgrounds, cultures and even in different time-zones. These experiences have taught me the importance of an empowering environment enabled by good communication, integrity and support. To me leadership is not about pointing a direction but together figuring out which path a team needs to take.

What is your motivation to be on the ECC/EmCom?

Since I am currently doing the Masters in Global Health and I am conducting my thesis-research within the United Nations University-MERIT in Maastricht, I am not going to be studying in Maastricht anymore from September 2020 onwards. However, I would still like to be involved in UAEM while simultaneously starting my career as a young and curious Global Health scientist. Being part of EmCom would be a great opportunity for me to stay in touch with UAEM and guide (new) members to make the most out of their time within UAEM. I believe that an empowered environment is important in order to foster development. Being able to guide European Chapters, assess their needs, provide them with access towards the right recourses and maintain and organize learning materials is something I am interested in doing. I believe EmCom plays an essential role in innovating and maintaining the important impact UAEM Europe can have within global health and I am very motivated to offer my assistance and guidance within EmCom. Also, I have a great ambition to engage myself in Academia in the future and I aspire a career as teacher. Therefore, I believe that being part of EmCom can offer me with great lessons for my future career and is a rewarding body for personal and professional development.

Briefly outline the specific skills you bring, and/or contribution you hope to make, to this leadership body.

A few of my strengths are my communication skills, being highly empathetic, taking care of people and offering my help as much as possible. I have an open-minded spirit, I have strong developed analytical- and critical-thinking skills and I will devote myself 100% to something I am passionate about. UAEM is an organization I am passionate about and especially as a young global healthie I am extremely happy to be part of UAEM. Being able to share my enthusiasm and guidance with European Chapters is something I am looking forward to. With my creative, somewhat chaotic mind, I hope to share new ideas and inspire others to dare to think out of the box and empower them to feel comfortable enough to involve in their Chapters’ main activities. In this way I hope to share positivity, be helpful and offer my support to Chapters who need it. Although I can be insecure sometimes too, I always try to develop myself as much as possible. I am not afraid to receive and give feedback and I am eager to learn from people around me. Working with integrity, being honest and having a real team-player spirit are examples of possible contributions towards EmCom. That being said, I hope to make a fruitful and innovating contribution to the EmCom leadership body. Not only do I plan to empower European Chapters, I also plan to empower the EmCom team, as well as myself. Maintaining a healthy balance between taking the lead and taking a step back when necessary is something I find important.

Are you currently serving as National or Local Coordinator within UAEM Europe? If so, which one and how will you divide your time between the two different roles?

Currently I am serving as a local Coordinator within UAEM Netherlands, Chapter Maastricht. I have been the Policy Coordinator from January 2020 and will be until the end of this academic year. From September 2020 onwards, someone else will take over this role. Therefore, I will be fully committed to a possible role within EmCom.
