At PMHS, students understand that free dress is a PRIVILEGE and not a right. The absence of an opportunity to earn this privilege, though, is detrimental; implementing a free dress reward program is crucial to student comfort, focus, and morale. With the colder months approaching, students know that winter in uniforms is unbearable; even when wearing uniform pants and long sleeves, students often catch themselves shaking both inside and outside of the classroom from the cold. It becomes a distraction during class because being so cold makes it impossible to pay attention. (Some teachers turn on their air conditioners even during December.) In addition to making students feel more comfortable and focused at school, implementing an opportunity for students to earn free dress will dramatically improve morale. Corona-virus has cast a dark cloud over this school year especially with the homecoming dance being postponed; however, implementing a rewards program will motivate students to come to school on time every day, because they know that they will be working towards earning free dress. Not to mention, when students do earn free dress, they will look forward to coming to school in a warm, comfortable outfit that they feel confident in.
With Covid-19, teachers have seen a dramatic increase in their daily workloads from keeping their classrooms safe to Zooming with virtual students. Students are extremely grateful for their efforts and do not want to add to that stress with drawn-out uniform checks. Consequently, this proposal takes that into account. It is not based on the individual but rather, it organizes students into easily identifiable groups to make uniform checks quick and seamless to perform:
Students will be grouped into their chronological grade level. During the week, encourage students to come to school every day to improve their group's overall attendance, and if possible, announce what group of students currently has the highest attendance during morning announcements; this will further create a sense of competition, which will increase student morale and motivation. Friday morning, announce what grade level has won free dress for the entirety of next week, then on the following Friday, announce the new winner. A class's roster shows a student's grade level by his or her name, so this proposal eliminates the need for complicated lists to be created and followed each week. Also, most classes house primarily one grade level of students, so this proposal dramatically accelerates uniform checks.
PLEASE NOTE: While students would enjoy the opportunity to earn free dress for the entire week, they understand the stress that teachers are under at the moment. After reading the proposal, if teachers still believe that daily uniform checks will be cumbersome, then the policy can be adjusted so that free dress is only allowed on Fridays.
Having an opportunity to earn free dress is yet another reason for students to be Picayune proud. Please allow us to show our spirit soon.
STUDENTS: Please fill out the following form with as many details as you can. Remember to be kind and appropriate.
