Since 2017, the Chinese government has incarcerated over one million Uyghurs, the second-largest predominantly Muslim ethnicity in China. Recent government policies have included the detention in internment camps, forced labor, intense surveillance, political indoctrination, suppression of religious practices, forced sterilization and much more. These actions against the Uyghurs in Xinjiang have internationally been described as severe crimes against humanity and even as genocide.

From enslavement to racial segregation to the killings of unarmed Black people by white police officers, Black Americans have experienced centuries of oppression and discrimination in the U.S. That continues to have detrimental effects on their physical and mental health.

With the European colonization of the Americas, indigenous peoples of the United States have experienced several traumatic events, such as forced relocation, genocide, the abduction of youth to government-funded boarding schools etc., which not only ruptured their ways of life but also created deep psychological injury, a sense of traumatic loss and robbed them of health-protective resources.
