The size of a pharmaceutical market is measured in terms of the total sales of pharmaceutical products in that country.

The population of a country can, therefore, be misleading when determining the size of the market since higher population does not necessarily mean higher sales.

The US is the largest pharmaceutical market. Total sales were estimated at 350 billion USD and the population is 318 million.

The regulatory approvals of both pharmaceutical drugs and medical devices are, broadly speaking, based around the safety and efficacy of the drug or device.

The work/effort required to receive a regulatory approval is significantly smaller if the drug/device can be shown to be equivalent to a product already approved and legally sold in the market.

For pharmaceutical drugs, manufacturers are expected to show “bioequivalence” (BE) to an “innovator drug” This is what happens when generic drugs are submitted for approval.

For medical devices, manufacturers are expected to show “substantial equivalence” (SE) to a “X”.

If BE or SE cannot be shown for a drug or device respectively, then the alternate regulatory pathways available to the manufacturer are a lot more expensive and time-consuming.

2) GSK won a Bronze award for it Migraine experience - where a virtual reality simulator gave users a sense of what a migraine is really like. Family and friends were able to then empathize with migraine sufferers.

In April 2016, the parents of 9-year old Michael Young were devastated when the drug Translarna was rejected by the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) for use in Scottish hospitals.

The SMC declared that there was "uncertainty” over its health benefits in relation to cost. It therefore concluded that the drug would not "represent a good use of NHS resources."
