Nominations for Volunteer of the Year
Thais Demontrond. Thais is a talented costume maker working at a prestigious organisation (Cosprop) who design and make costumes and accessories for film, tv and theatre. Despite her busy life, Thais has dedicated few hours each week supporting AFK with travel training young people. During the lockdown period, Thais delivered weekly zoom yoga sessions to our young people through the summer Holiday Programme. Thais introduced Fareeda to the owner and Business Manager who subsequently invited our young people on a tour and arranged a work trial for one of our trainees. The work trial has successfully resulted in paid work in their Returns Department.
Zulfia Chynar-Satimbai Zulfia. Began volunteering in June 2019 with the summer fair on the face painting stall. Zulfia then began supporting one of our trainees on her work placement at the Dementia Centre as well as supporting Laurence’s group with session support, Chaperoning on the mini bus and travel training young people. In September this year, Zulfia volunteered as a travel buddy on the Travel Trainer programme where she was immediately offered paid hours and now supporting a young person from his home to The Brit School in Croydon. Zulfia is balancing all this with her life as a busy mum with small children which shows her dedication and passion for helping others.
Wahid. Wahid is in paid work with Nando’s but still found the time to mentor other young disabled children and young people and volunteered as a Festival Assistant for the I AM Festival (an annual event to include children with Special Educational Needs and their schools to take part in an inclusive arts & cultural event run in partnership with The Tate Modern). Wahid was amazing working with the schools and all the partners involved; particularly putting young people at ease and thinking through what support they might need when visiting The Tate. Throughout this project Wahid was calm, approachable and engaging and overall a very positive influence with the rest of the volunteers. Unfortunately, due to Covid the project ended before the festival was able to take place.
Shamsa. Shamsa also volunteered her time with the Tate project, despite being very busy in her work as a host for Nandos. She was able to put her customer service skills to good use and created so much enthusiasm and energy for the festival that many people felt as though the festival had already begun. Shamsa is a complete natural as a host and was really disappointed that she wasn’t able to show her school around the Tate, especially since she had gone to so much effort to understand everything there was to know about the Tate, including where the nearest toilets and exits were in case someone wanted to know! Thank you Shamsa.
Philip Pham. On discovering that AFK sessions were not really suited to his personality, Phillip decided he wanted to do try something else and wanted to start by helping others. He began volunteering at Crisis where he showed potential for practical work and taking instruction from his his manager and job coach. He picked up tasks quickly, used his initiative, was focussed and completed each task from start to finish within an appropriate time scale. We know his work as a volunteer is very rewarding and worthwhile for Philip and we are very proud of the amount of effort he has put in.
Community Champion of the Year
Marty Watson. Marty has put in an incredible effort this year as he prepared to take on the London Marathon. Unfortunately, the marathon was unable to take place, but Marty had already powered through his fundraising target raising an incredible £3,500 for our work. He did this through organising events in his community like fundraising parties and bingo nights.
Anna Hammond. Anna decided to create a bespoke challenge for herself this year to raise funds for AFK. She received a wheelchair from us 14 years ago and wanted to do the South Downs Way walk ever since. This year that dream became a reality and along with Bramble the dog, she took on the challenge raising £1400 for our work. What a great way to spend lockdown!
Catherine Ling. Catherine has been a supporter of our work for a number of years and is our longest serving volunteer. Last year Catherine helped to launch our very first fundraising group and supports our work by holding various fundraising activities across the year. This year Catherine hosted an Oscars party, supported various activities over Christmas and is always the first person to share our work through her networks spreading community cheer and awareness along the way!
Mark Perkins. Mark took on our very first virtual event fundraiser this year, AFK Beach. We were nervous about taking our events online and Mark was pinnacle in helping to spread awareness for our cause throughout the event. His presence on social media helped to engage people further into our work, he was a force to be reckoned with whilst taking on the challenge too, encouraging his team mates, cheering on other teams and generally just shouting so loud and proud about out cause!
Community Outstanding Contribution
Holy Trinity Church. Holy Trinity Church has supported our work at AFK for over 6 years! They have been truly committed to their fundraising for us and regularly hold quiz nights in aid of our work, as well as donations at Christmas they have raised over £3000 for our work, just incredible. Trevor, a member of the parish has been a huge ambassador for our work and is always keen to hear our stories and share them with his community, as well as putting in a lot of hard work to making their fundraising events possible!
Atwal Brices. Paul & Michael Atwal Brice have been ambassadors for our work for several years now. AFK provided some specialist bikes for their twin sons Levi & Lucas and the family have been hugely supportive of our work ever since. Their presence on social media always speaks highly of our services and really gets people to understand why we do what we do. They have done various fundraising activities for us over the years, spoken at events and more recently have launch and incredible #AccessForAll campaign highlighting the need for better accessibility for facilities all over the country!
Trainee Outstanding Contribution
Delvon Rodney. Delvon has made a brilliant effort to stay in touch and on track with his job goals throughout this difficult pandemic. He has participated in many of the online activities including mock interviews and really took on board the feedback he received from the employer. We know that Delvon can be extremely shy in certain situations, but he has really pushed himself this year and impressed the employer when they interviewed him for a second time, and we are equally as impressed with his new found confidence.
Devalle Webley. DW has a mild learning disability and autism. DW wants to be a sports coach or be involved in the sports industries. DW came to AFK via the Haringey Employment Support Programme (HESP) and was assessed at Haringey 6th Form during his studies and became an external trainee with the life and work service. During lockdown in Spring, DW kept very focused on his work but continued to engage with AFK online, by phone, text and email. DW took part in the Microsoft coding sessions and had online mock interviews with Clifford Chance and American Express. DW did practice sessions with AFK and it paid off as he absolutely smashed it on each occasion with the corporates! A work placement was arranged at Total Boxer (TB) in March but unfortunately lockdown scuppered it, but DW thanked Matt for the opportunity even though it hadn’t taken place. AFK have spoken to Matt at TB and while the industry is understandably coping with hard times they would still welcome DW in the new year once things have improved, that’s great news. DW’s focus on this college work paid off, he got 3 distinctions for his Level 3 BTEC in Sports this summer and continues to inspire other trainees around him with his calm and positive attitude as he actively pursues any opportunities, paid or voluntary to keep skills up.
