STONEHENGE   The summer solstice, druid legends, crowds of hippies and thousands of curious visitors. 1 ___ The other destinations on the 2010 ‘critical list’, published by Wanderlust magazine, are Wadi Rum in Jordan, Tulum in Mexico, Yangshuo in China, Timbuktu in Mali, Bay of Fires in Tasmania, Macchu Picchu in Peru and Jaisalmer in India. According to the report, they are in serious danger of destruction as a result of their popularity with tourists. 2___   Wanderlust commented: “The Threatened Wonders List aims to draw attention to destinations that could be all but destroyed for future generations if something doesn’t change soon’’. 3 ___ It also suggests ways in which visitors can travel to these areas responsibly.   “Some people may be surprised that Stonehenge is on the list, together with Wadi Rum in Jordan and Machu Picchu in Peru. 4 ___ The gradual deterioration of the surrounding areas is only allowing onlookers to enjoy a fraction of this historical wonder.. The fact that the Government and various planning bodies cannot agree on implementing a radical solution to this problem is a national disgrace.”   Tourism can be a double edged sword for destinations. 5 ___ The magazine urges people to travel with care and responsibility as they embark on their explorations.   As one of Britain’s most popular tourist attractions, a Unesco World Heritage Site and a relic of utmost importance in understanding our past, Stonehenge serves as an icon of Britain. It has been immortalised by the painters, poets and writers. It even appeared in the Beatles film ‘Help’ in the late sixties. 6 ___According to a random sample of visitor reactions, Stonehenge is “just a pile of rocks”, “smaller than I thought it would be” and a “waste of money”.   Stonehenge, with its shabby entrance, ugly fences and the thunder of two busy roads, is as old and as important as the Egyptian necropolis at Giza, but you wouldn’t guess that from its presentation, which has all the aesthetic appeal of a bus station.   Fortunately, there would appear to be a happy ending to this story of historical shame.
