The Associated Students of the University of Montana proposed a project in 2015 to increase UM's sustainability measures that included installing solar panels over the parking garage behind the library. This would decrease the school's carbon dependency and was also projected to save millions of dollars every year in electricity costs. However, with the school needing to make hard financial choices to protect the continued well-being of the campus, one of the budget cuts made funding for this project negligent, effectively sidelining this project. Since then, no substantial effort towards the project has been sustained and the parking garage remains unchanged.
