Watch the bracketed placeholders. A question like "How satisfied were you with [Company]?" reads as a leading question if you leave a compliment in the brackets. Swap in a plain name and nothing else.

How Long a Survey Can Be Before People Stop Answering

Every figure below comes from a source in the reference list. Nothing here is our own estimate.

Questions per survey. The median of the 109 templates in this library, measured Sep 2026, against the length distribution SurveyMonkey reported across more than 26,000 of its own surveys. [2]

That last pair is the useful one. People give the first question about 75 seconds and the thirtieth about 19. Answers near the end are quicker, and quicker answers carry less thought. The most opened template in this library, the user acceptance testing survey template, runs 16 questions in about 4 minutes, which sits inside the range where people still finish.

Are these survey templates really free?

Yes. All 109 open in full with no account and no payment. You can read every question, run the survey, and collect responses on the free plan. Nothing on this page is a preview of paid content.

Do I need an account to use a survey template?

No. Open any template and it loads as a live survey you can edit and send. An account only becomes useful later, when you want to come back to the same results from another device.

Can I copy the questions without using SuperSurvey?

Yes. Every question is printed as plain text on its template page, and a sample from six categories sits in the question bank above. Select the text and paste it wherever you like. There is no email wall and no download form.

How many questions should a survey have?

Fewer than most people expect. The median survey on SurveyMonkey runs 12 questions, and 75 percent of surveys have 21 or fewer.[2] Templates here run 4 to 36 questions, with a median of 14.

How long should a survey take to complete?

Aim to finish inside 7 to 8 minutes. Past that point SurveyMonkey saw abandon rates climb, with completion rates dropping between 5 and 20 percent.[1] The templates here take 2 to 10 minutes.

What is the difference between a survey template and a questionnaire?

A questionnaire is just the list of questions. A template is that list plus the answer scales, the question order, and the logic that skips people past parts that do not apply to them. The templates here include all of it.

Should a survey be anonymous?

It depends who is answering. Staff surveys about managers or pay need to be anonymous or people soften their answers. Customer surveys about a specific order usually need to be identified, or you cannot follow up. Each card here says which mode the template assumes.

How many responses do I need before the results mean anything?

There is no single number, but the shape of the data matters more than the count. Watch for one group answering very differently from the rest. If a team of eight is the unit you care about, six replies from that team tells you more than 200 replies spread across the company.

Can I edit the questions in a template?

Yes. Nothing is locked. Change the wording, delete questions you do not need, and add your own. Most templates read better once you swap the bracketed placeholders for your own product or team name.

Which template should I pick if I am not sure?

Start from the decision rather than the topic. The chooser table lists what you might want to find out, and names one template for each. If two look close, pick the shorter one and run it sooner.

Can I use these templates for academic research?

You can, but check with your ethics board first. These are written for practitioners, not validated for publication. If you need a scale with published reliability figures, use the original instrument and cite it properly.

Why are there no Gallup Q12 or Maslach Burnout Inventory questions here?

Because we are not licensed to reprint them. The Gallup Q12 is copyrighted and cannot be reproduced outside a participating client engagement.[4] The Maslach Burnout Inventory is licensed per respondent through its publisher.[5] The Utrecht Work Engagement Scale is free for academic use only.[6] Our items are written in house instead.

Category counts on this page are counted from the live library on 21 Aug 2026 and are 29 employee, 21 satisfaction, 12 marketing, 10 training, 9 technology, and 6 business.

Why you will not find the famous question sets here

Gallup Q12 items are copyrighted and cannot be reproduced outside a participating company without permission. The Maslach Burnout Inventory is licensed per respondent through its publisher. The Utrecht Work Engagement Scale is free for academic use only. We write our own items instead, which is why you will not find those famous statements anywhere in this library.

Limits

The length and completion figures come from SurveyMonkey platform data, published without a date and without a linked raw dataset. They describe surveys sent through one product, so treat them as a strong signal rather than a general law. Our own templates have not been tested for construct validity, and none of them is a substitute for a validated scale.
